A mix of 21 Matching and Sorting Phonics activities suitable for Grades K through 1 and also for ESL/ENL children.

Animal sounds. Real animal sounds and their equivalent phonetic versions.

Sound play (1)-(5).  As an early introduction to phonics, the aim of these five activities is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmenting skills. These activities will encourage children to: Tune in to sounds (auditory discrimination), Listen and remember sounds (auditory memory and sequencing) and to Talk about sounds (developing vocabulary and language comprehension).

CVC Word building (1), (2) and (3). Three activities for children who are beginning to blend and segment CVC words. Children need to add letters to complete simple CVC words. This is differentiated activity of three levels, each level becoming more difficult.  RF.K.2.D; Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds in three-phoneme (CVC) words.

Digraphs_ch _sh, _th, _wh. These four activities match ch, sh, th and wh digraph words with pictures. Children simply rotate the 2 outer circles till a matching word and picture line up. Once they’ve said the word correctly, they can make another match and so on! Or, play in pairs and have one child choose a picture and the other find the matching word. There is no scoring associated with this game.

Find long a words.  Children sort out words with the long a from other random words and words with a short a.

Long a short a words.  Sorting short a words from long a words. The activity changes each time it runs.

Long a short a.  Sorting long a words from short a words using pictures only.  The activity changes each time it runs.

Long e short e.  Children sort out words with the long e sound from words with a short e sound.
Long e short e, (Animated version).

Blends sorting 1. bl sl and fl blends. A blends sorting activity using sl, bl and fl blends.  These blends are introduced in Phonics Pack 1.  We recommend that children try the matching activities first before this sorting activity as there is no word list to help the children. A random selection of blends and images that are NOT blends play every time the activity runs.

Blends sorting 2. tr dr and cr blends. A blends sorting activity using dr, cr and tr blends.
